Government Consultation on Violence Against Women and Girls (VAWG) Call for Evidence

The Government launched a survey to collect views which will directly inform the development of their strategy (which officially includes male victims of crimes such as domestic abuse). The deadline for submissions is Friday 19th February at 11:45pm.

According to this strategy named “Violence Against Women and Girls”, all male victims, including victims like stalking and sexual violence, are classed as being victims of “Violence Against Women and Girls” crimes. It covers all forms of abusive behaviour - domestic abuse, including economic and financial abuse as well as coercive and controlling behaviour. Many of you will also have experienced false allegations and these too should be included in your accounts of 'lived experience'.

To make your voice heard including why male victims of these crimes should not be classed in this unhelpful way - please fill in the survey here (closing date 19 February at 11:45pm).

You can find full details of the consultation here: Violence Against Women and Girls (VAWG) Call for Evidence - GOV.UK (www.gov.uk)

The survey will take approximately 15 minutes to complete. All responses to the questions will be anonymous and no-one will be able to know you participated. Regardless of your gender, everyone aged 16 or over is welcome to complete the survey and contribute to the call for evidence. You do not have to have experienced violence or abuse to take part and share your views. You won't be surprised that we have deep concerns that the strategy diminishes the focus and need to support men and boys as well as women and girls. It is divisive in its approach, results in inadequate resources to support men who are victims and their children e.g. through a lack of refuges for men and their children and risks creating a culture of systemic rather than support for anyone who needs it. It also discourages men from reporting their abuse and thus creating a vicious cycle.
