Exploring men’s experiences of abuse and Gaslighting - University of Cumbria Survey

Dr Elizabeth Bates from University of Cumbria and her research team are recruiting participants for a new study exploring men's experiences of gaslighting.

The aim of the project is to explore the experiences of men who have experienced aggression and control from a female partner. Specifically, we aim to understand the ways in which they have experienced gaslighting as part of a wider pattern of psychological manipulation and abuse. Gaslighting is a form of manipulation that seeks to sow seeds of doubt, where someone makes their partner question their own memory, perception, and sanity.  It includes using persistent denial, misdirection, contradiction, and lying, and it attempts to destabilise them and their beliefs.

Responses are completely anonymous and no identifiable information will be taken so there will be no possibility of tracing your data back to you.  The data will be used to write research outputs on men’s experiences of gaslighting and psychological/emotional abuse with a goal of ensuring service providers are able to inform their provision with this knowledge.

After you have participated you will be debriefed and signposted to sources of support, and also reminded of your right to retrospectively withdraw up to two weeks after participation.

We hope to understand how it can form part of a wider pattern of psychological manipulation and abuse.
